The Bulletin of the Conference on the Theological Task in India: Master Table of Contents

The Bulletin of the Conference on the Theological Task in India was an early failed effort to develop Indian Christian theology. The first issue of the Bulletin gives a full background for the event that led to the journal, and that issue is almost entirely taken up with a detailed report on that 1942 conference.

The second Bulletin gives important background to ongoing issues arising from the 1942 meeting. There was not as much unity as hoped, but study guides are the core of this issue aimed at developing theological maturity that might result in an effective apologetic for India.

The third Bulletin was not produced until 1950 but provides the information that a second meeting had been held in Serampore Sept. 23-27, 1946. This third bulletin was to prepare for a third meeting at Jabalpur, January 26-30, 1950, but it included content from the first two meetings. P. Chenchiah’s witty report on the Serampore event surely ruffled feathers and illustrates some of the tensions involved in the events.

The fourth Bulletin gives extensive reports, papers and discussion from the third conference; very stimulating material. An aggressive program for further events and reflections is also present, but it seems that no further events happened. It seems unlikely to be a coincidence that the Indian Journal of Theology began publication from Serampore in 1952. R.C. Das opined (The Seeker and Pilgrim, vol. 12 no. 1, 1958; at some point to be posted on this website) that it was conservative missionary reaction against the deeply Indian element in the Indian Theological Conferences that spurred the birth of an Indian journal, whereas Das points out that Indian theology is the need.
